The World Cup Is About to Test Our Health System

The 2026 FIFA World Cup is only a few weeks away, and millions of people are going to be coming to North America to watch it. But that’s a lot of people in one place, which means health officials have a lot to worry about. Normally they have a plan for big events like this, but this year there’s a bunch of extra events going on. There’s an Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda that the WHO called an emergency, plus a rare hantavirus outbreak and measles cases going up. On top of that, the US isn’t part of the World Health Organization anymore, which makes things more complicated. This CNN article talks about how officials are getting ready for all of it, the problems with running an event across three different countries, and the money issues that host cities are still dealing with. Here’s what I thought was interesting.
